When I was young, one of my favorite books was Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden. I had a large copy, bound in a pale green and decorated with the kind of floral filigree that today we would call cottagecore, and I carried it around for ages. That girl with the bravery to ask for a parcel of land for gardening still lives in my mind.
As Burnett so beautifully expresses, in asking for a garden, the girl is actually asking for is a little world of her own to cultivate and care for. This is what we do when we craft with friends, write stories, and draw or color. Our creativity participates in making a kinder and more beautiful world, set apart from daily harshness, where we can meet people, respect life, and share experiences.

What Is Cottagecore Aesthetic?
The cottagecore aesthetic is a lifestyle trend that developed as an escape from the ordinary patterns of daily life, particularly the suburban grind. It romanticizes the tranquility of rural or rustic life, prioritizes homemade and homegrown goods, and advocates for making space to appreciate nature, beauty, and solitary thought. The aim of the cottagecore aesthetic is to embrace this basic aspect of creativity to cultivate a more beautiful, gentle, and kind world around you. There’s a lot of whimsy and affirmation here.
"Cottagecore" is currently the most popular for it. Nonetheless, this aesthetic has gone by a few different names in the past decade, including farmcore, countrycore, and the mushroom aesthetic.
While many cottagecore styles center around gardens, not everyone who has a cottagecore vibe is a gardener. Other favorite cottage core activities include baking (especially baking pies), reading books in front of a cozy fire, pressing dried flowers, playing acoustic instruments, foraging for cute mushrooms, and picking up frogs while hiking around the woods.
Though the way we style ourselves as cottage core may be new, the sentiments and longing behind this aesthetic are as old as the urban-rural divide itself. This gives us a lot of amazing cottagecore books and art to draw from when cultivating our personal gardens.
What Does Cottagecore Mean?
If you're wondering what a cottagecore aesthetic means, look no further than an idyllic farm cottage on the edge of a forest. This aesthetic is about integrating your own life among the cozy aspects of nature.
The cottagecore aesthetic encourages a lifestyle that romanticizes the wholesome aspects of rural and farm life. It thrives in simplicity, nature, and traditional crafts, evoking a sense of nostalgia and tranquility. Cottagecore celebrates a slower pace of life, harmony with nature, and a do-it-yourself spirit, creating a cozy, idyllic retreat from modern urban living.
What Does Cottagecore Look Like?
Cottagecore looks like a quaint, idyllic countryside scene with fields and burgeoning wildflowers. Often there's a lush garden, an open book lying on a table, a cat snoozing on a porch rail, or a toad hiding in a watering can.
Imagine the sun shining perfectly through your windows. You can read to the humming of the bees or arrange cut flowers in a vase. A cottagecore aesthetic girl collects wildflowers in flowing skirts and reads books covered in floral filigree. And a cottagecore aesthetic man wears flannel shirts or even overalls that can easily transition from fieldwork to a picnic.
But the cottagecore aesthetic can go deeper, too, embracing the full cycle of nature, with bug and butterfly collections, and even crafts involving animal bones. This tends to be the distinction between soft cottagecore and the dark cottagecore aesthetic.
Cottagecore Aesthetic Color Palette
The cottagecore color palette features soft, earthy tones and pastels. Think muted greens, dusty pinks, creamy whites, gentle yellows, and light browns. These colors evoke a natural, cozy, and nostalgic feel.
How to Get a Cottagecore Aesthetic
Key cottagecore designs include floral patterns and prints, dried flowers, vintage aesthetic clothing, handmade goods, and activities like gardening, baking, and foraging. Interiors often feature rustic and antique furniture, natural materials, and soft, earthy colors.
Cottagecore style favors flowy dresses with floral prints, often shapeless but for a well-placed belt. Don't forget vintage-inspired blouses, as well as high-waisted skirts and overalls. Add cardigans, straw hats, and lace-up boots. To level-up your cottagecore fashion, keep an eye out for fabric quality. Opt for natural fabrics like linen and cotton in soft, earthy tones. Then, accessorize with dainty jewelry and handmade accessories.
