Christmas Star Ornaments to Make

I bet you never knew there were so many ways to make paper star Christmas decorations, right?

My favorite ones right now are the origami stars because they were fun to learn how to make and I think they look amazing. They are a little tricky to fold though.

The most popular are probably the woven paper stars . Loads of people have written in to say how much they like them. What's neat about them is that they look so ornate and complex but they're surprisingly straightforward DIY homemade Christmas ornament to make.

Favorite DIY Homemade Christmas Ornaments

These are some of my favorite DIY Christmas ornaments that I've made - there are full step by step instructions for all of them.

The string trees homemade Christmas ornaments are probably the ones I'm proudest of, they just turned out so beautifully and they look great with LED candles inside them. They were a little fiddly to make, and the finished trees are a bit delicate, but I think that's part of what makes them beautiful.

The clove oranges smell divine and are really simple to make. The cinnamon dough ornaments also smell amazing. When you make them you'll want to eat them. (But please don't! Trust me they don't taste good.)

DIY Homemade Christmas Ornaments from Paper

Aside from stars, there are loads of other styles of DIY Christmas ornaments you can make from paper. I think they add a warm homely touch to your Christmas tree that you just don't get with store-bought ornaments.

My favorite of these are the classic round paper baubles . I just think they look really simple and elegant. They're also fairly easy to make. I also really love the geodesic paper baubles . They're so mathematical and cool!

Several people have written in to say how much they like the round paper lanterns . The template for them is very adaptable so even though I've made them look sort of oriental you can equally well make them with Christmas colors, or make them into little orange pumpkins for Halloween.

I think the pom pom snowmen have personality and I smile every time I see them in my living room. It's fun re-arranging their hats, scarves and arms to give them different expressions.

Pipe cleaner ornaments are fun to make with your kids, because they're so easy. You can get much more creative than just the candy canes - when you visit that page you'll see that you can make animals and all sorts of other creatures too.

Advent Calendars

Do Advent calendars count as homemade Christmas ornaments? In a way I think they do, because they're something that you hang up in the house around Christmas time.

The first one we made was the origami Advent calendar . A great thing about that design is how quick it is to make. There's a simple origami fold for making the pockets that literally only takes a few seconds per pocket. And I think the final calendar turned out quite nicely.

The Advent peg wreath with chocolates all around the outside proved to be too much temptation for us. Despite our best intentions I'm ashamed to say that all the chocolate disappeared well before the beginning of Advent. Oops. Members of our household have a bit of a sweet tooth.
