Fascinating Moon Facts
While you’re coloring, learn a couple true facts about the moon. Sadly, it is not made of cheese and won’t turn anyone into a werewolf, but that doesn’t make it any less fascinating. If you want more facts, check out the Natural History Museum’s moon page.
How Big Is the Moon?
Very! You certainly aren’t going to pluck it out of the sky and put it in your pocket. It’s about one-fourth the size of the earth at approximately 6,783 miles around.
Is There Anything on the Moon?
The moon is mostly made of rock, specifically “anorthosite.” There’s also lots of dust and other materials on the surface (including six flags from US Apollo landings). As for water, scientists believe there are some craters on the moon that have ice in them, since the sun never hits those craters.
How Far Away Is the Moon?
Let’s put it this way: You aren’t going to get there on a casual stroll. According to the National History Museum, you’d sit on a normal plane for 17 days non-stop to get to the moon. Because of its orbit, the moon wavers between 222,000 and 253,000 miles away. Sometimes it looks much closer than that, but that’s an illusion. The closest you’ll ever get is a moon coloring page.
Can You Breathe on the Moon?
Nope! The moon does have an atmosphere, but it’s very, very thin. Here on Earth, we have plenty of air to breathe. On the moon, you’d have only an “exosphere” containing neon, ammonia, carbon dioxide, helium, methane, and argon. Not very nice to breathe.
Why Does the Moon Look Like Swiss Cheese?
That’s because of all the craters. When something approaches the Earth, the atmosphere often burns it up. The moon lacks that protection, so a lot more stuff hits it, including rocks careening through outer space. That’s what made all those craters that look like Swiss cheese holes. Though you can certainly color your moon coloring page to look like Swiss cheese and keep the myth alive if you like!
Does the Moon Really Affect the Tides?
Yes, this one is true! The moon has a gravitational pull, and whatever side of the Earth is facing the moon will feel that pull. That makes water bulge toward the moon, producing high tide. The water on the opposite side will also bulge out, coincidentally. It’s a powerful effect that results in the two high tides and low tides we experience every day.
