Fun Facts about Earth Day
- Earth Day is April 22nd every year. In 1970, this day was set aside to celebrate and protect our amazing planet.
- Over 1 billion people in more than 190 countries participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic event in the world!
- Bees are Earth Day heroes! They pollinate about one-third of all the food that we eat. Protecting them means protecting our food supply.
- Only 3% of the Earth’s water is fresh water and most of that is frozen. Taking care of our water supply is one of the most important things we can do.
Ways to Celebrate Earth Day in the Classroom
- Start a classroom garden. Plant seeds in cups and place them on the windowsill to watch them grow. This is a great hands-on reminder of how life begins with a little care and water.
- Sort it out! Set up a recycling station and practice sorting paper, plastic and trash. Small habits make a big difference.
- Read an Earth Themes booth together as a class and then discuss one thing each student can do to help the planet.
- Create eco-art using recycled materials like old newspapers, cardboard tubes, magazines and bottle caps to make new works of art!
- Take a nature walk. Head outside to observe local plants and animals and then sketch what you found in a nature journal.
