Tips for Coloring Scary Monsters

Coloring these printable monster coloring sheets is so much fun! If you’re feeling creative, take your sheets and color a unique design using paints, crayons, markers, pencils, highlighters, and more with our top tips.

Best Colors for a Monster Coloring Page

This depends on the monster and whether you’re creating a dark, scary, & realistic image, or a fun, light, & friendly monster. The color choices you make will set the mood!

If you like the classic look for scary monsters, dark colors like blacks, browns, grays and dark greens work really well.

If you’d like to create your own unique monster, use bright colors, so that they stand out. You could also get fancy and add stripes, polka dots, or even rainbow colors. Be sure to add in the traditional Halloween orange too!

Add Detail and Features to a Scary Monster Coloring Page

Why not add darker tones to your coloring sheet to add shadows for extra creepiness! You can add features like scars, fur, spikes, scales, and more to your monster to make him one of a kind.

Classic monsters like vampires or werewolves, tend to be dark colors - black suits for vampires, dark brown fur for werewolves. You can also add glowing eyes or some red “blood” around their fangs or hands/paws.

For aliens, why not add an extra eye, or three?! The only limit to your monster’s look is your own imagination!

10 Monster Facts

We love a fun fact! Here are ten terrifying things you may not know about monsters:

  1. Monster stories have been around since the beginning of civilization! They have always been a part of human mythology and folklore, scaring people for thousands of years.
  2. It’s good to remember monsters are FICTIONAL! They are the subject of many books and movies, but thankfully, they aren't real.
  3. Need to get rid of a werewolf? Only silver bullets or arrows can kill them.
  4. The word “Vampire” originated as the Slavic word “obyri”, which eventually evolved into the Bulgarian “vampir”.
  5. There have been hundreds of sightings of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland, but whether it is real or not still remains a mystery.
  6. Zombies began making their way into pop culture way back in the early 20th Century. American soldiers that were stationed in Haiti told tales of sorcerers that brought the dead back to life.
  7. Stories of werewolves go right back to ancient Greece where Zeus turned Lycaos (the cruel king of Arcadia) into a wolf as a punishment.
  8. Love Frankenstein? You might be surprised to know that the undead creature is actually called “The Monster”. Frankenstein was the fictional scientist who created it, so “Frankenstein's Monster” came to be.
  9. There is a medical explanation for vampire stories appearing in Eastern Europe. Porphyria, a hereditary blood disease, plus rabies, both included vampire-like symptoms including insomnia, delirium, and strange behavior.
  10. There are many strange myths about people becoming werewolves - you don’t just need to be bitten by one. A Romani curse or drinking water from a werewolf’s footprint are just a couple more. Don’t go drinking out of puddles!
